Mission & Values

Our three core objectives in operating the MaP Doctoral School:

1. Attract diverse talents

Diverse talents are the foundation for next generations of future-ready graduates in materials, processes and manufacturing technologies.

Cohorts of doctoral students benefit from the cohesion of a community that favours encounters for peer networking, which in turn facilitates collaborative research endeavours as well as establishing a common culture of best practice doctoral education.

2. Develop leading-edge thematic education

Leading-edge thematic education, alongside modern research directions in materials, processes and manufacturing technologies, is the core of the doctoral learning journey.

Future-ready graduates have a strong thematic backbone coupled with cross- and transdisciplinary competences as well as transferable skills that enable the creation of impact beyond their own scientific discipline, for the benefit of society. See study programme for more info.

3. Cultivate collaborative research across disciplines

Cross-disciplinary collaborations in materials, processes and manufacturing technologies are vital for innovations that shape our world to thrive. Forward leaps can only be made by joining the competences of a diverse scientific community that can tackle grand challenges beyond the research fields of the individual PIs.

To take full advantage of complementary know-how available within ETH, additional possibilities for collaborative encounters are cultivated at all levels.

The three interlocked squares of our logo each represent one of the primary goals, thereby highlighting the interconnection of our objectives. The squares are in the primary colours. We recognise that any colour (of a thematic track) emerges from this foundation.

Yellow symbolises the goal to achieve greater things together in cross-disciplinary collaboration. The colour is associated with freshness, positivity, and optimism.

Blue stands for thematic education, which builds the foundations of our graduates. The colour represents the inspiration for new ideas and the drive to create new things.

Magenta represents the diverse talents at the School. The colour stands for uniqueness and welcomes diversity.
